More than fifteen bright pink volleyball jerseys filled the PTS gym on Oct. 5. With rosy balloons and banners covered in pink ribbons, the JV and Varsity volleyball teams were ready to raise awareness about breast cancer during their annual Dig Pink game.
“Recognizing Dig Pink is essential because it allows us to pay tribute to and stand by those battling breast cancer, offering our help and support in any way we can,” junior volleyball player Giovanna Colina said.
The Dig Pink games were modeled after those hosted by “The Side Out Foundation,” which was founded by Rick Dunetz, a former volleyball coach, who created the foundation after his mother’s stage IV breast cancer diagnosis. By selling baked goods, t-shirts, and hosting raffles, the Dig Pink event raised $430 for the Susan G. Komen For the Cure. Students also raised an additional $14,000 for the breast cancer organization through their Race for the Cure team on Oct. 14.
Senior Alexandra Navarro said that playing in the Dig Pink game is more meaningful for her because she knows someone who has experienced breast cancer themselves.
“I really think it means a lot to them [that we host this event],” Navarro said. “I think it is very important for everybody to come out and support a great cause that we fight for.”
