Mr. Baretto instructs juniors on college essay writing techniques

As the year comes to an end, and the college application process ticks closer, English teacher Mr. Baretto gets a head start on the college essay writing process for his junior classes. As the rising seniors approach their final year of high school, they begin to work on their personal statements which they will submit to colleges in the fall. Through his intensive one-on-one training, Baretto works with students to brainstorm and write.

To kickstart the brainstorming process, Mr. Baretto encourages His students to reflect on their own experiences, passions, and goals. Whether it is a transformative life moment, a meaningful community service project, or a personal struggle that shaped their worldview, he helps students uncover the stories that will resonate with college admissions officers.

But on top of all of that, Baretto urges students to think outside the box and stray away from the common essays he has seen over the years. This allows for students to have an essay that shows who they are as a person, showcasing not only that they are strong writers but deep thinkers.

Junior Ryan Alvarez, who has been a musician for 13 years, is writing on the journey music has taken him on and how it has impacted him. “His [Mr. Baretto’s] process is really detailed and has helped me write a better essay,” Alvarez says.

Once students have a clear idea of their essay topics, they are guided through the process of crafting a compelling narrative. Baretto helps them structure their essays, offering feedback on everything from thesis statements to paragraph transitions. With a keen eye for detail and his knack for storytelling, he helps students transform their raw ideas into polished papers.
